Two If By Sea is a one-of-a-kind multi-piece ceramic sculpture commissioned by KalaRara Roma and created in the historic ceramic town of Caltagirone, Sicily.
The sculpture depicts the stylized heads and tails of two tuna, a fish deeply tied to Sicilian history and Mediterranean maritime culture. For centuries tuna fishing formed an essential part of the island’s economy and culinary tradition.
Each element of the sculpture is handcrafted using traditional pinching and coiling techniques before being fired at high temperature. The vibrant surface decoration is created through a poured glaze process, producing richly layered colors and expressive drips that animate the vertical forms.
The six individual components can be arranged in multiple configurations depending on the space, allowing the composition to adapt to different interiors while maintaining its sculptural presence.
Created in the studio of one of the most respected contemporary masters of Caltagirone ceramics, whose works have been exhibited throughout Italy including the Venice Biennale, this piece celebrates both the artistic heritage of Sicily and the enduring cultural identity of the Mediterranean.
