SArredamenti Borsani, Varedo — Italy, circa 1940s
This elegant set of six dining chairs was designed by the renowned Italian architect and designer Osvaldo Borsani and produced by Arredamenti Borsani in Varedo during the 1940s.
Borsani, the son of master cabinetmakers, was among the few designers of his generation capable of bridging traditional artisanal craftsmanship with a forward-looking modern design language. His work reflects a deep understanding of materials—particularly wood—combined with a refined sense of proportion and structural clarity.
These chairs demonstrate that balance beautifully. The sculptural backrests feature softly curved profiles that emphasize the expressive potential of wood while maintaining a disciplined architectural structure. Vertical turned elements introduce a rhythmic visual contrast to the organic curvature of the upper rail, creating a subtle dialogue between tradition and modernity.
The resulting design occupies a fascinating position between the lingering influence of the Italian Liberty tradition and the emerging modernist sensibilities that would define post-war Italian furniture design.
The chairs have been newly upholstered in a burgundy linen fabric infused with subtle gold tones. The wooden structures remain sound and present well, showing only minor signs of wear consistent with their age.
This set works beautifully around a dining table in both contemporary and historic interiors. Their elegant proportions also make them suitable for hospitality environments or refined meeting spaces where classic Italian design adds character.
