Rome, Italy — circa 1970s

This striking oversized bench was designed and produced in the 1970s by Romeo Rega, one of the most distinctive Italian furniture designers of the late twentieth century. The piece was originally custom made for a private client, making it a unique example within Rega’s body of work.

The design captures the sophisticated glamour associated with Roman interiors of the 1970s. A long, tufted velvet seat rests within a polished chrome frame, creating a refined contrast between soft upholstery and reflective metal structure. The frame terminates in simplified Roman key–inspired feet, a subtle classical reference that echoes the architectural heritage of Rome while maintaining the clean geometric language typical of Rega’s work.

Founded in Rome on December 31, 1969, the Romeo Rega studio quickly became known for luxurious furnishings defined by strong geometric forms and the use of polished metal finishes such as chrome, brass, and gilt surfaces. Rega collaborated with prominent designers including Willy Rizzo and Gabriella Crespi, contributing to the glamorous decorative vocabulary that characterized Italian interiors of the era.

Because of its generous proportions and elegant structure, this bench functions equally well as seating in a living room, along a corridor wall, or as a striking statement piece in retail and hospitality environments.

Condition

The bench remains structurally sound with its original polished chrome frame. The velvet upholstery presents well and maintains the sculptural tufting that defines the seat.

Ideal Placement

Its exceptional length makes the bench particularly suited for entry halls, corridors, boutique retail interiors, or large living spaces where elongated seating can anchor the room while maintaining visual lightness.
