Marble Cutter’s Compass Floor Lamp with Granite Base
Industrial Object Adapted as Lighting — Italy, Assembled 2019
This striking one-of-a-kind floor lamp transforms an antique marble cutter’s compass into a sculptural lighting element. Originally used as a precision tool in stoneworking, the compass has been preserved as the central structural element of the piece, celebrating the beauty of traditional craftsmanship and industrial design.
The lamp rests on a rough-carved granite base that anchors the composition with substantial weight and natural texture. Rising from the base, a hand-forged iron tube with a bark-brown patina supports the antique compass, whose articulated structure allows the lamp to remain fully adjustable.
An oversized filament bulb is suspended from the upper compass point, creating a dramatic industrial silhouette while emphasizing the mechanical elegance of the original tool. Because the compass remains functional, the lamp can be adjusted in height and rotated freely within its base, allowing the light to be positioned according to the needs of the interior.
The piece combines rustic materiality with industrial precision, making it both a lighting source and a sculptural object.
Condition
The antique compass remains in good working condition and the structural elements present well. The lamp was assembled in 2019 and includes its original socket and oversized filament bulb.
Ideal Placement
With its sculptural scale and mechanical character, this lamp works particularly well in loft interiors, hospitality environments, gallery spaces, or rustic architectural settings where industrial objects contribute to the atmosphere of the space.
Dimensions
Maximum Height: 210 cm
