ILLUMINATED LATE 18TH CENTURY CHINESE BAR CABINET
Chinese Lacquer Wedding Cabinet, Late 18th Century
This exceptional late eighteenth-century Chinese wedding cabinet retains the rich decorative vocabulary associated with traditional lacquer furniture produced during the Qing dynasty. Originally finished in deep red lacquer, the surface has developed a naturally aged oxblood patina over time, lending the piece remarkable depth and character.
The carved cabinet doors feature large oval lacquer panels with gilt decoration depicting scenes of martial activity within a courtyard setting, while smaller oval reserves above and below present delicate compositions of flora and fish. The cabinet interior preserves its original decorative painting of birds and flowers set against a green ground, a traditional motif symbolizing prosperity and harmony.
Below the cabinet sits a chest with two carved drawers fitted with oval brass pulls, providing additional storage and reinforcing the architectural presence of the piece.
The cabinet has undergone careful restoration to ensure both structural stability and functional versatility. The lacquer on the doors has been sensitively restored while preserving the historic decorative elements, and the cabinet interior has been repainted to refresh the display space. The piece has also been adapted for contemporary use with six clear tempered glass shelves and discreet recessed LED spotlights, transforming the cabinet into an elegant illuminated display case or bar.
Because of its vertical scale and rich decorative surfaces, this cabinet functions as a dramatic focal point in interiors where collectible design and historic objects are used to create depth and narrative.
Condition
The cabinet has undergone restoration including the conservation of the door lacquer and repainting of the interior. The structural elements remain sound. Contemporary glass shelving and recessed lighting have been integrated to allow the piece to function as an illuminated display cabinet or bar.
The electrical system can be easily adapted for European, UK, or US outlets.
Ideal Placement
This architectural cabinet is particularly suited for dining rooms, libraries, hospitality interiors, or gallery-like living spaces where its height and illumination can create a strong visual focal point.
