Large Brutalist Ceramic Tortoise Sculpture by Toni Fabris

€2,900.00

Milan, Italy — Early 1960s

This striking ceramic sculpture was created in the early 1960s by the Milanese sculptor Toni Fabris in his studio in the Brera district of Milan, a historic center of the city’s artistic community.

The monumental tortoise form reflects the sculptor’s Brutalist approach to ceramic work. The shell is constructed as a dense sculptural relief composed of numerous small figures of people and animals that emerge across its surface, transforming the animal into a complex narrative landscape.

This accumulation of forms, combined with the expressive modeling of the ceramic surface, embodies the Brutalist interest in raw material presence and powerful sculptural texture.

The sculpture is finished in white enamel with black enamel detailing that emphasizes the relief and structural rhythm of the composition. The piece is signed “T. Fabris” at the base of the tail.

Large sculptural works by Fabris from this period are rare and represent an intriguing example of Italian Brutalist studio ceramics of the mid-twentieth century.
