Original Louis John Rhead “Swan” Poster for Le Journal de la Beauté

€2,700.00

1897

This striking and rare original poster was designed in 1897 by the Anglo-American illustrator and graphic artist Louis John Rhead as advertising for the French publication Le Journal de la Beauté, issued by the publisher La Palme.

Rhead was one of the most celebrated poster designers of the late nineteenth century and played an important role in the flourishing international poster movement associated with the rise of Art Nouveau graphic design.

The composition, often referred to as “Swans,” exemplifies the refined elegance of the period. Flowing lines, stylized natural forms, and a balanced decorative composition reflect the aesthetic language that defined poster art at the end of the nineteenth century.

Although Rhead worked primarily in the United States, he occasionally accepted international commissions, making this example particularly notable within his body of work.

The poster has been professionally linen backed, a standard conservation method used for important historic posters to stabilize the paper and preserve the artwork for long-term display.

Condition

Very good antique condition. The poster has been professionally linen backed for conservation and stability, allowing it to be safely displayed while preserving the integrity of the original print.

This work functions beautifully as a focal artwork in libraries, living rooms, or gallery-style interiors. It also pairs elegantly with both Art Nouveau and mid-century interiors where graphic works on paper provide contrast to sculptural furnishings.
