This one-of-a-kind high-fire ceramic stool is both sculptural object and functional design piece. Handmade in the historic Sicilian hillside town of Caltagirone, it carries forward a ceramic tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages.
Renowned for centuries, the ceramic artistry of Caltagirone became so culturally significant that the town and its surrounding late-Baroque architecture were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This piece was created in the bottega of one of the most respected and avant-garde masters of Caltagirone ceramics, whose work has been exhibited in museums throughout Italy and presented at the Venice Biennale.
One of two specially commissioned stools, each piece differs subtly in its application of color, ensuring individual character within the pair.
The form is crafted entirely by hand using traditional pinching and coiling techniques. Surface decoration is achieved through a pouring method that allows color to flow organically across the ceramic body, creating a dynamic and painterly finish. Variations and slight irregularities are inherent to the handmade process and enhance the authenticity and uniqueness of the work.
Compact yet visually striking, this piece functions equally as a stool or sculptural side table.
