A Roman Street Reimagined in Lead and Light
“MAMMA ROMA” is a unique sculptural coffee table designed and produced by KalaRara Roma in 2024. Rooted in the textures and atmosphere of the Eternal City, the piece offers a contemporary interpretation of the iconic Roman sampietrini — the cobblestones that define the historic streets of Trastevere.
The tabletop artwork is created on canvas with oxidised lead insets arranged to echo the irregular geometry of Roman cobblestones. Between these lead forms, acrylic paint in hues of lapis blue and crimson is blended with travertine powder and sand, replicating the granular mortar that binds the original stone streets.
The overall composition evokes a Roman street at twilight — mineral, atmospheric, and quietly luminous.
An edge-to-edge extra-clear tempered glass panel protects the surface while preserving its dimensional depth. The artwork rests within a hand-forged steel base, irregularly ground for texture and supported by minimalist U-shaped legs.
Handcrafted entirely by Roman artists and craftsmen, MAMMA ROMA is both functional object and material homage to the city that defines KalaRara’s identity.
